STATE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

 

State fees will not be collected by NIPR (on behalf of NY) when a transaction is declined according to NY business rules. Transaction fees and processing fees will still apply. Violation of the following rules will result in a decline response.

As soon as the license is issued, the applicant will have 20 days to electronically print the license by accessing the Department's website at http://www.dfs.ny.gov/insurance/abindx.htm.  If the license is not electronically printed within the 20 days, a paper license will automatically be generated and mailed. Once the license is generated and mailed, a $15.00 duplicate license fee will be charged to any future license print requests.

Resident License

  • Applicants – If you previously held a license, resident or non-resident, in the state of New York, you will need to send a paper application to the state at this time. If you are not sure if you ever had a license in NY, please contact the NY Dept of Insurance to verify. http://www.dfs.ny.gov
  • Individual applicants - Applicant must be 18 years old or older as determined from the applicant's Date of Birth.
  • Background Questions: Applicants answering "yes" to one or more of the background questions may be required to provide additional information to the Department. You will be notified by mail of what to send and where to send it. Please do not forward any documents until you receive a request from the Department.
  • Applicant must not have an inactive Non Resident license in NY.
  • Applicant must not have an inactive Resident license in NY.
  • Individual licenses will be issued with an expiration date determined by date of birth:
    • If you were born in an even numbered year, your license will expire on your birthday in an even numbered year.
    • If you were born in an odd numbered year, your license will expire on your birthday in an odd numbered year
    • If applicant was born in an even year and applies PRIOR to their birthday in an even year, expiration will be in the same year as application. If applicant applies AFTER birthday in an even year, applicant will be issued a full cycle license. If applicant applies in an odd year and was born in an even year, expiration date will be issued on the date of birth on the following year.

Ex: Birth Date 06/19/1976 - applicant applies 04/15 /2010, applicants expiration will be 06/19/2010.
Ex: Birth Date 06/19/1976 - applicant applies 07/15/2010, applicants expiration will be  06/19/2012.
Ex: Birth Date 06/19/1976 - applicant applies 08/15/2011, applicants expiration will be  06/19/2012.

  • Applicant applying for Excess Lines must hold a Broker license with Property and Casualty.
  • DRLP entered on a Business Entity Excess Lines license must be a Sublicensee of the Broker license.
  • Any DRLP list on the Business Entity Excess Lines license application must be listed as an officer, owner, director, partner, member or manager.  Employees should not be listed.
  • An accepted response on a transaction where the applicant has answered yes to a background question for NY, does not mean the application has been approved by the state. An accepted response means the transaction has successfully loaded into the states system for further review. Once NY has completed any investigation that is necessary, a decision will be made on the application. Applicants will be receiving a notice from NY for supporting documentation needed.

Resident Renewal

 

  • Renewal dates are determined by the expiration date of the license id and the license type. Licenses are electronically renewable if the license is still active and the license expiration date occurs within the next 120 days.
  • All Producers: Address information displayed on this application may not be the information currently on file with the New York State Insurance Department. Please visit the website indicated below to verify and/or update address information currently on file with the New York Insurance Department: http://www.dfs.ny.gov/insurance/abindx.htm
  • When attempting to access licensing applications, please include the alpha characters ('LA-','PC-','BR-' etc) in front of the NY license number.
  • Applicant must hold an active renewable license in NY.
  • Applicant Renewing for Excess Lines must also renew their Broker license with Property and Casualty.
  • DRLP entered on a Business Entity Excess Lines license must be a Sublicensee of the Broker license.
  • Any DRLP list on the Business Entity Excess Lines license application must be listed as an officer, owner, director, partner, member or manager.  Employees should not be listed.

*Excess Line Fee is based on Largest County in New York State in which applicant maintains an office or in which risks are located upon with the propose to place insurance as an Excess Line Broker.  Fee is $50 for county population of less than 100,000 and fee is $400 for county population of over 100,000.
